The two rows show what happens if the roll is unrolled along your room’s length versus rotated 90° and unrolled along the width — one orientation is almost always more efficient than the other, and it’s rarely the one people guess first. If either of your room’s dimensions fits within the roll width, you’ll get a single seamless piece; if both dimensions are wider than the roll, you’ll need extra strips joined with a seam, and the tool tells you which orientation keeps the seam count — and the waste — as low as possible. This is a shopping-list estimate rather than a cutting plan: your fitter will still confirm the exact layout and seam placement before cutting any carpet.

Why does the roll width matter so much?
Broadloom carpet is sold in fixed roll widths — usually 4m or 5m in the UK. You always pay for the full width of whatever length you cut, even if your room is narrower, so a room that fits neatly within one roll width wastes far less than one that needs a wider roll or extra strips.
When would I need a 5m roll instead of a 4m roll?
When your room's narrower dimension is wider than 4m but 5m or under — a 5m roll then covers it in a single piece with no seam, which usually works out cheaper and looks better than joining two 4m strips, even though the roll itself costs a little more per metre.
Is a seam a problem?
Not if it's done properly. A skilled fitter places seams along the pile direction, away from doorways and out of the main sightline, and heat-seals or glues them so they're barely noticeable underfoot. It's worth asking where the seam will fall when you book, especially in an open-plan room.
Does this account for pattern matching?
No — this tool models plain broadloom carpet only. Patterned carpets with a repeat (checks, stripes, some Berbers) often need extra length so the pattern lines up across a seam, which can push the real waste figure higher than shown here. Flag it to your fitter if your chosen carpet has a visible repeat.
