How This Flooring Is Made

Two-ply yarns are tightly twisted together and heat-set so the twist holds its shape permanently, usually in polypropylene, polyester or nylon, sometimes as a wool blend. The heavy twist creates a dense, level-cut pile that stands upright rather than lying flat, giving the slightly nubbly, uniform texture that sets a twist apart from a smoother saxony finish. It's the carpet most UK fitters reach for on a standard family job.

Feel Underfoot

Firm underfoot rather than plush — a practical, everyday feel rather than a sink-in luxury pile. The dense twist gives good resilience, so it springs back after furniture or footfall rather than staying compressed, while still being soft enough for bare feet in a living room, bedroom or landing. It sits comfortably between a hard-wearing loop and a deep saxony.

Wear & Durability

One of the most durable carpets available for the price — the tight twist hides footprints, vacuum marks and general flattening far better than a smooth pile, which is exactly why it's the default choice for hallways, stairs and busy family living rooms. Colour flecking in many ranges also helps disguise everyday marks between cleans, and a decent twist will comfortably outlast a saxony under the same footfall.

Its combination of durability and reasonable cost makes it the go-to for whole-house jobs — living rooms, landings, stairs and bedrooms alike. It copes well with pets, children and general footfall, though a genuinely heavy-traffic hallway in a large family home may still benefit from stepping up to a loop pile or carpet tile instead.

Cleaning & Care

Vacuums easily thanks to the level, upright pile, and most ranges come with a stain-resist finish as standard. Spills should be blotted rather than rubbed, to avoid working them into the twist, and a professional hot-water extraction clean every year or two keeps the pile looking fresh and springy for years to come.
