How This Flooring Is Made
A continuous roll of flexible PVC flooring, typically 2m, 3m or 4m wide, built up in layers — a printed design layer for the wood, tile or stone look, a wear layer on top, and often a cushioned foam backing for comfort and sound deadening underfoot. Laid in as few pieces as possible to minimise seams, either glued down or loose-laid depending on the job and the size of the room.
Feel Underfoot
Soft and slightly cushioned underfoot where a foam-backed product is used, warmer and quieter to walk on than a hard tile floor, though firmer than carpet. The surface is smooth and consistent, with no grout lines or joints to catch dirt in a well-fitted room, and it stays comfortable to stand on for long periods at the sink or hob.
Wear & Durability
Fully waterproof and highly resistant to scuffs, stains and everyday spills, making it one of the most practical flooring choices available for wet or busy rooms in any home. The main weakness is sharp or very heavy objects, which can gouge or dent the surface, and prolonged direct sunlight can fade the printed pattern over a number of years.
Which Rooms It Suits
The default choice for kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms, cloakrooms and rental properties, where its waterproof, easy-wipe surface and lower cost than LVT make it hard to beat as an everyday flooring option. Not generally recommended for bedrooms or living rooms, where carpet or a rigid hard floor tends to be the preferred finish instead.
Cleaning & Care
A damp mop with a neutral floor cleaner is all it needs day to day — no sealing, waxing or specialist products required, unlike many hard floor finishes. Avoid dragging heavy furniture across the surface without protective felt pads, as this is the most common cause of scuffs and tears on an otherwise low-maintenance, easy-to-live-with floor.
