How This Flooring Is Made

A cut-pile carpet made from longer, less tightly twisted yarns than a twist pile, finished so the fibres stand straight and even across the surface. Traditionally spun from wool, though polyester and nylon saxonies are now common at lower price points; the looser twist and longer pile length are what give it that smooth, uniform look prized in show homes and formal rooms up and down the country.

Feel Underfoot

The softest, most luxurious feel of the mainstream carpet types — deep, plush and genuinely comfortable underfoot, which is exactly why saxony is associated with formal lounges and adult bedrooms rather than hallways. Bare feet sink in noticeably more than they would on a twist pile or loop carpet, and it has a visible sheen when the pile catches the light at different angles.

Wear & Durability

Because the pile isn't tightly twisted, footprints, vacuum lines and furniture indentations show up far more readily than on a twist or loop carpet, and the pile can flatten over time along heavy-traffic routes. It's best suited to rooms with lighter, more occasional footfall rather than a busy family hallway or staircase used daily by the whole household.

Which Rooms It Suits

Best reserved for bedrooms, formal lounges and dining rooms where the finish matters more than heavy-duty wear resistance. It's a poor choice for stairs, hallways or homes with boisterous pets and young children, where the pile will crush and show visible tracking within months rather than years of daily use, however well it's fitted.

Cleaning & Care

Regular vacuuming is essential to stop grit working down and abrading the base of the fibres, and pile-lay marks respond well to a light brush or a specialist carpet rake to lift the fibres back upright. Spills need prompt blotting, as the looser weave lets liquid spread further before it's fully absorbed into the pile beneath.
