Getting an Accurate Measurement
Measure at floor level, wall to wall, at the widest points of the room — skirting boards and door architraves have a habit of eating a centimetre or two if you measure too high. For an L-shaped room, it rarely matters exactly where you split the two rectangles as long as together they cover the whole floor without overlapping. Stairs are trickier to eyeball, which is why we use a standard per-step allowance rather than asking you to measure each individual tread and riser — just count the steps and adjust the allowance if yours are noticeably deeper or shallower than average. Why does the recommended figure include a 10% waste margin?
Carpet rolls come in fixed widths, so you rarely use every scrap — offcuts, pattern matching and trimming around doorframes and awkward corners all eat into the roll. A 10% margin on top of the raw floor area covers that in most standard rooms without over-buying.
How do I measure an L-shaped room?
Split it into two rectangles however makes sense on your floor plan — a main rectangle and the smaller “leg”. Measure and enter each one separately and we add the two areas together, then apply the same 10% margin to the combined total.
What's the 0.55m step allowance for stairs?
It's a standard allowance covering the tread, the riser (the vertical part) and a little wrap-under, which is how most stair carpet is cut and fitted. If your stairs are unusually deep, shallow, or winding, edit the figure — a fitter measuring on-site will always confirm the exact amount needed.
